Leading change means making choices.
Turn executive sponsorship into priorities, resources, and decisions people can act on.
People understand a change agenda through the decisions leaders make: what receives attention, what gets funded, what is stopped, and how competing demands are resolved.
A clear ambition gives the organization direction. Delivering it requires choices about capacity, sequence, ownership, and acceptable tradeoffs. Those choices make the ambition credible to the people expected to act on it.
Make the reason for change specific
Explain the business problem and why it matters now. Describe what customers, employees, or other stakeholders should experience when the work succeeds. Be candid about what is known, what remains uncertain, and how the team will learn.
Different groups will experience the change differently. Make room to hear those differences and explain the implications for their work. Questions and concerns can reveal gaps that a program plan has missed.
Match the agenda to capacity
Review the demands already placed on the teams doing the work. Decide what can pause, what must continue, and where additional capacity is needed. A new priority becomes actionable when leaders also explain how it fits with existing responsibilities.
Sequence the work so that each stage creates the capability needed for the next. Make commitments small enough to inspect, with clear owners and a useful definition of completion.
Stay present when tradeoffs become difficult
Sponsorship includes resolving conflicts that teams cannot resolve for themselves. Create a dependable decision forum, respond to obstacles, and follow through on commitments. Recognize progress without concealing setbacks.
When evidence changes, explain the adjustment and its consequences. Consistency of purpose can coexist with a willingness to change the plan. That combination gives people a reason to keep engaging with the work.
What decision have we left unresolved that is preventing our people from moving forward?
